An Evening at the Theater

“I created them,” said Herr Zauber.

“Without love?” I insisted.

Herr Zauber froze, began to shake with tension, and after a few moments sighed and deflated like a punctured balloon. his eyes unfocused as he looked deep into the past. Speaking as one would of a beloved child who had lost himself to drugs, he said, “I was proud of them. Too proud by far. I should have forced the dark faction to give me some influence in their raising. But they said, truthfully, that I knew nothing of war. And I was busy making more. In my absence, they turned them into brutes.”
