An Evening at the Theater

As we had the morning before, I retrieved my rifle, checked my revolvers, and Crystal got the door. She called the servants in without exposing herself, and they removed the breakfast trays. Once the servants were gone, Shadow Shaft gestured to Crystal, and she said, “The next group of candidates may enter.”
Eight goblin maids crept in, heads down demurely, and lined up before the table. This was both the second day and the middle of the second round of choosing. All the girls had dark-green shadows under their eyes and looked exhausted from lack of sleep. All were still covered from head to foot in silk so sheer it revealed more than it hid. None were as gorgeous as Anjelita, but any one of them could have fit in at Berkeley. Dress them up as a Goth and no one would know the difference.
