Tea with an Elder God

Okay, a quick note on proper behavior when asking a god for a favor. Before approaching the god it’s a very good idea to figure out whether it’s a made-up god (who only exists because a group of human beings decided it does), a lesser entity who is pretending to be a god, a powerful being that we mistook for a god, an actual god, or, well God God in the modern Judeo-Christian sense. Each one of these entities is quite different in nature, and thus will require a fundamentally different approach.

In our case, we were approaching a very ancient actual god. This is rather like trying to get a meeting with a very powerful ruler (who can have nasty things done to you if you piss them off). It’s extremely difficult to do in the first place, and if you manage it, you better know exactly how to behave. You know, take three steps into the room, descend into a kneeling full-court formal bow in which your forehead smacks the floor, rise only when told to do so, step forward seven times, perform the kneeling bow again, rise only to your knees, and wait for permission to speak. That sort of thing.

Fortunately, this god was a childhood friend of mine, and I’d been raised right and knew what to do. First, we needed to find an appropriate location.
